NW 6 – Leine Meadows at Old Laatzen

The traditional center of the old town of Laatzen at Eich Street still has many remnants of the brick industry, which here comes to bloom in the 19th century and has helped the rather agricultural area to economic prosperity. Brick clay has been brought here from the adjoining Leine floodplain since long, which is clearly visible on the old chapel of 1325. The haugh as raw material for bricks was taken here up to the middle of the 20th century, leaving shallow pools that were used by the former open air bath Laatzen for swimming and are now managed by the local fishing club. The Wiesendachhaus (house with meadows on the roof) is fishing clubhouse and popular restaurant, and thus a beautiful destination for all who are available year round on foot or by bicycle here in the Leine meadows. The pools are today important refuges for waterfowl that can be observed throughout the year here in the nature reserve Alte Leine. In the extensively used wet meadows we encounter egrets and storks, gray geese and many other visitors. Amphibians have a permanent home again in many of the pools. The Alte Leine (old river Leine), a little sluggish flowing tributary of the larger river Leine, has more the appearance of a dead stream branch. Beavers have settled again in the upper reaches of the small river lined with tree with pollard willows. Their tracks were discovered and documented by attentive members of the local Nature Conservation (NABU), which has engaged pretty much for the preservation of natural assets in the southern Leine floodplains. Enjoy with us your stay in this natural oasis on the edge of Laatzen town.
