Von Hinueber Garden Tour

In the north-west of Hanover the Monastery Marienwerder from the 12th century is one of the oldest buildings in Hanover region. The monastery bailiff Jobst Anton von Hinueber (1718-84) designed 1766-74 one of the two first landscape gardens in English style in Germany on the lands surrounding the monastery. Von Hinueber did so without destroying the original landscape, which was characterized as the shire from the nearby river Leine. So not only remains of the former riparian forest, but also several inland dunes from the last ice age that have come to rest on the adjacent river terraces where conserved. The river Leine, which still flows alongside the park today, recovers from the expansion projects of river banks and the decades of toxic discharges of Varta AG on Rossbruchgraben in today's Science Park Marienwerder. The park-side banks can again develop in many places a steep bank and thus give valuable species such as the kingfisher, a livelihood. Jobst Anton von Hinueber was a Freemason and an enlightened man of his time. These characteristics can be seen in many places in the landscape garden and have the thematic design of the parks affected. His son Gerhard von Hinueber developed the park in the early 19th century and made him a romantic garden, which was considered the prototype of a melancholic garden. In the late 19th century, the park got gradually forgotten, and in the 20th century no one knew anymore about this unique garden. Only the Hanover city's efforts to EXPO 2000 have managed to re-open some of the old lines of sight and make the basic system of the park back to life.
